WW2 Italian Army Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine in 7.35 Carcano by Gardone V.T. in 1939
** All-Original, Matching, & Non-Import! ** SOLD
Description: This is far and away one of the best examples we have had in a long time of this neat World War 2 Italian Army weapon. This is a Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine chambered in 7.35 Carcano made by the Gardone V.T. firm in 1939. It is an all-matching, all-original, and NON-import marked gun. It is most assuredly a U.S. veteran's trophy gun, brought back to the States from the Mediterranean Theatre after their service in WW2 ended. It was obviously used in combat but remains in very good condition overall. The Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine, otherwise known in Italy as the Cavalry Moschetto Modello 91/38 Cavalleria, was adopted by the fascist Italian Army in 1938 and features the Model 1891 bolt-operated action fit to a 17.7" inch barrel fitted with a folding spike-type bayonet and shortened stock and handguard. It was built by four Italian firms during WW2 in both 6.5 Carcano and 7.35 Carcano with total production figures near 100,000 manufactured, with the vast majority of production chambered in 6.5 Carcano. Both calibers were loaded into the gun using the standard 6-round Carcano "clips"(stripper-like clip), which were inserted into the action from the top and automatically dropped free from the bottom of the magazine housing after the last round was fired. The small and lightweight carbine (6.5 lbs) was intended for cavalry(mechanized) troops, mountain troops, and artillery or machine gun crews that had to carry a lot of equipment in addition to their rifles. The Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine proved to be a good combat weapon overall, simple, reliable, well-made, and reasonably accurate. The only weak spot of the carbine was the barrel-mounted folding spike bayonet, which would work but was not robust enough. This particular example is really a nice piece and is chambered in 7.35 Carcano, a scarce chambering in this model. Made in 1939, it was the first year Gardone Val Trompia made the Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine in 7.35 Carcano. This carbine shows a lot of beautiful factory gloss-blue finish remaining on the metal, with only some minor handling marks and light finish wear showing. As you can see from the pictures, this Carcano has a great combat-used look to it. The original bolt in this carbine still shows some good original case colors on it, particularly on the rear of the bolt/cocking piece. The rest of the bolt shows a nice gray patina, free from any pitting. All of the factory stampings and proofs are crisp and clear on this weapon, and all of the numbered parts are matching. The bore in this Carcano is superb, mirror-bright with strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel. There is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible of any kind in the bore, certainly one of the best Carcano bores I have seen in a very long time. The original stock on this Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is in great shape overall and is numbered to this gun. It is particularly neat in that this stock was originally made for a Carcano Model 91/28 Carbine fitted with the Model 1928 Gredade Launcher or Tromboni Launchi Bombe. When production of this carbine/grenade launcher was ended in 1934 there was a number of left-over stocks that were never fit to a weapon. These new stocks were re-fit by the factory by plugging the cut-outs for the grenade launcher on the right side and then cut-down to be used with the Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine going into production; this is one such carbine. You can see the factory plugged areas on the right side of this stock in the photos provided. While the stock shows lots of minor dings, dents, and handling marks, it is free from any cracks, post-war repairs, or major damage. The original Italian Army inspection cartouche, a boxed crown over "FAG 39", is crisp and clear on the left side of the butt. Above the Italian Army cartouche is the caliber stamp "CAL 7,35", and the serial number of the carbine is stamped below the sling well "C 4118" on that same side. All of the original stock hardware is intact and in good condition, including the original buttplate with a small trap door for a cleaning rod. The original short wooden handguard on this Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is in excellent condition, a perfect match to the stock and it's tight to the gun with no wiggle. All of the controls on this Carcano are in perfect working order, including the folding spike bayonet. The action on this carbine is slick and smooth, and the bolt locks into battery perfectly. There is no doubt that this Carcano would function just as well today as the day it left the factory 81 years ago. If you have been looking for an all-original and un-molested Italian WW2 weapon for your military collection, this Gardone V.T. Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine would be a superb choice. It is certainly one of the neatest weapons that the fascist Italian forces fielded during the war, and this example in 7.35 Carcano should prove to be an excellent long-term investment.
