WW2 Japanese Koishikawa Tokyo Arsenal Type 38 Arisaka Rifle in 6.5 Jap Caliber
** Nice 1920's Production Non-Import Matching-Bolt Rifle **
Description:
This is a beautiful 1920's production Type 38 Arisaka rifle made for the Imperial Japanese Military by the Koishikawa Arsenal, otherwise known as Tokyo Arsenal. It is an all-matching rifle and is not import marked, likely a G.I.'s trophy bring-back. These early-production Type 38 Arisaka's are beautiful rifles by any standard. The Tokyo Arsenal took a great deal of pride in their construction and was the only arsenal in the Japanese supply system that manufactured the Type 38 until 1929, when additional arsenals began production of the rifle. During the 1929 expansion of the Japanese armaments industry the Tokyo Arsenal was into the 2 million serial number range of Type 38 rifles. These pre-1929 guns (below 2,000,000 serial range) exhibit excellent overall fit and finish, beautifully strawed small parts, and a commerical quality gloss blue finish over expertly polished metal surfaces. This particular rifle is serial number 758,496, making it's date of manufacture approx. 1925. As mentioned earlier, it is an all-matching rifle including the bolt but does have a ground Mum typical of surrendered Japanese rifles. It displays all of the desirable early features described above and the large protrusion on the safety knob at the rear of the bolt, which is only found on the early rifles. The bore in this Type 38 is exceptional, bright throughout with no pitting, erosion, or visible imperfections. The rifling still looks very strong with nice sharp lands the length of the bore. This Type 38 has one of the nicer bores we have seen in years in these rifles. The original blue finish on this rifle is excellent in some areas and shows wear in others, typical of an issued rifle used in World War 2. As you can see in the pictures provided, the rifle has a great look to it with a nice consistent patina. The original factory straw finish (yellow) on the trigger, rear sight spring, bolt stop spring, guard screws, and floorplate release catch is still visible to varying degrees, with some very nice color showing particularly in the protected areas. The original stock on this Type 38 Arisaka is in very good condition overall. Both the stock and handguard are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The wood shows some dings/dents/scratches typical of an issued rifle, but has a great look to it and all of the wood matches well, which is not always the case. All of the stock hardware is intact and in great shape, including the original buttplate and cleaning rod. All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order and the action is both slick and precise, with the bolt turning into battery perfectly with no slop. This Tokyo Arsenal Type 38 should shoot and perform just as well today as when it left the factory 94 years ago. If you have been looking for a very nice example of Japan's first main battle rifle of World War 2 without spending over $1000 bucks this early-production Type 38 Arisaka would be an excellent choice. It is not too often that we run across such a nice un-messed with example, much less one of these beautiful early rifles that is all-matching with a superb bore!
