New Zealand SMLE Mk. IV* .22 Rifle
Description: Serial #C734, .22 LR, 25" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This single shot converted Mk. III* has a 1917 date on the wrist, “.22 No. 2" marked bolt head, “.22" stamped magazine housing (minus spring and follower), and large “NZ" stamp on the left side of the receiver. The metal retains 90-92% of the armory re-applied blue finish with some plum-brown fading and silvering at the high edges and projections, particularly at the matching numbered nosecap, bearing surfaces of the matching numbered bolt, and on the magazine housing. The forend is numbered to the gun just aft of the nosecap while the wood has a very nice added varnish finish over scattered minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout, heaviest on the buttstock which has a crisply marked brass disk on the right side: “N^Z / 3 (screw head) 24 / 2341"; and further large “N^Z" stamp just ahead. A period Broad Arrow marked linen sling, very stiff with age, is also installed. This is an excellent, thoroughly marked New Zealand .22 training rifle conversion, and would make a splendid addition to any collection.
