1888 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 with Original Leather Sling
** Beautiful All-Original Example ** SOLD
Description: This is an excellent example of the US Model 1884 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 with an original leather sling manufactured by Springfield in 1888. After the US Civil War the US Army realized the advantage of metallic cartridges and the necessity of outfitting their soldiers with breech-loading rifles. The US adopted the Springfield Trapdoor Rifle in 1873 and made various adjustments to the sights and locking mechanisim in 1880 and 1884 with a rod bayonet design in 1888. This particular example is a Model 1884 with some small changes to the locking mechanism and the adaption of a marksman-style sight as compared to the Model 1873. The rifle is in beautiful condition with excellent bluing rating 95% plus. The wood only shows the the most minor of nicks and dings, something one rarely finds on U.S. Military issue rifles. It has an excellent grain with sharp original cartouches. The bore is bright with sharp lands and grooves. The case-hardened breech lock has wonderful sharp coloring. Everything works perfectly, and the action locks up as tight as the day it left the factory. It comes with an original issue leather sling which is a very rare find. The leather is in remarkable condition for being over 100 years old, it's still flexible and soft. All of the sling hardware is intact and in great shape. This is a fantastic find and would go perfectly in any collection. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Springfield Model: 1884 Serial Number: 406875 Caliber Info: .45-70 |
