Antique US Springfield 1884 Trapdoor 45-70 Gov Single 25.5" Barrel Excellent Bore
Description:
The Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor is a single-shot rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. It features a 25-inch barrel and a wood stock configuration. The breech block bears the “U.S. Model 1873” marking, and the lockplate is marked “U.S. Springfield.” Serial number 310280 places manufacture in early 1886. The rifle has been sporterized from its original military configuration, with a shortened barrel and modified stock profile. Proof marks including “VP” and the eagle emblem remain visible on the barrel.
The barrel, receiver, breech block, lockplate, and hammer have been refinished with a blued re-coat showing thinning, scattered dings, light rust freckling, and surface scratches. The bore condition is described as excellent, clean with strong rifling. A fiber-optic front sight has been installed, and the 1879-style rear sight has been altered from its original form. The walnut stock has been cut down and reshaped, incorporating painted brown diamond patterns. Wear marks, small dings, and scratches are present throughout the wood surfaces. A homemade foam recoil pad has been attached to the steel buttplate.
This rifle retains its single-shot trapdoor action and standard one-round capacity. The markings and modifications indicate a customized sporting adaptation of the U.S. Springfield service rifle pattern. No additional accessories or packaging are included beyond the described components.
