EDDYSTONE MODEL OF 1917 "EDDYSTONE" MFG 1918 .30-06 SPRG
Description: Guns Listing ID: 1092214 When the US entered WWI it was desperately short on 1903 rifle. Luckily several US companies were finishing up production of British Pattern 14 rifles for the British war effort. It was decided best to modify the P-14 design to fire the .30-06 cartridge from the .303 British. While the 1903 remained the primary service rifle of the US, production of the Model 1917 far outpaced the 1903 and it is estimated that 3/4 of the American Expeditionary Force had Model 1917‚‚s by the armistice. The 1917 Enfield features a Mauser like extractor which is known for reliable feeding and extracting due to its controlled round feeding style. The 1917 action is one of the strongest receivers of the military style bolt actions. It has a push style safety lever that physically holds and blocks the cock-on close firing pin. The rear sight features a peep aperature for primary \"battle\" sighting and a flip up graduated peep for longer range shooting such as seen in the trench style warfare in WWI. Please note the primary peep sight is slightly bent backward. Overall the gun appears to be complete minus the issued accessories such as cleaning kit and bayonet. The manufacturing date according to the serial number is November of 1918, which coincides with the barrel stamp of 11-18. Due to the \"E\" stamp for Eddystone and the date stamp of 11-18, one would assume this is the original barrel. The bore is in nice shape with strong rifling. The crown appears to be in decent shape with no indication of excessive wear. Unfortunately, a barrel gauge is not available to verify. The overall metal finish is a moderate patina with some light to moderate rust on the receiver where the bluing is worn off. The stock has many dings, dents and scratches. The overall finish is consistent with a moderately used battle rifle that‚‚s over 105 years old. Mechanically, everything seems to be functional and in good useable condition. Includes leather sling, as pictured. The sling appears to be newer production. *Note* Due to the nature of military surplus rifles of this age and the rifle‚‚s condition, we did our best to present the condition of the rifle. Although it appears to be functional from a mechanical standpoint, it is a collector piece and should be inspected by a certified gunsmith before firi SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: EDDYSTONE Model: MODEL OF 1917 "EDDYSTONE" MFG 1918 Caliber Info: .30-06 SPRG Condition: Used - Non-Certified Barrels: 26 BARREL Finish: BLACK /W WOOD STOCK |
