HIGH CONDITION SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1866 .50-70 TRAPDOOR
Description: HIGH CONDITION SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1866 .50-70 TRAPDOOR. This was the first successful conversion of the Civil War 1863 percussion muskets to .50-70 center fire. Only 25,000 were made in 1866 before the model was updated to the later Models 1868 and 1870 in .50-70 and finally the Model 1873 in .45-70. Many M-1866 rifles were shipped west for the Indian Wars and it is hard to find one in top condition. These were finished case colored hammers and lock plates with oil-quenched "black finished" breech blocks. All other parts wre finished "bright" or "in the white" with no blue etc. This example shows some good case colors in the most protected parts of the hammer/lock plate with the balance simply faded from age to a mottled gray. The breech block retains most of the original oil-quenched black and is marked corrrectly "1866." The lock plate is correctly marked with the usual Springfield and Eagle with the date of 1864. The barrel, trigger guard etc. are bright and do not show any signs of being polished or steel-wooled. Solid stock with normal light handling marks only and a sharp "ESA" cartouche at the wrist. Bore is bright and the action is tight. Much scarcer than the later models. A very historical U.S. issue rifle that would be difficult to find in better condition. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .50-70 Government Manufacturer: SPRINGFIELD Model: 1866 Barrel Length: 40 Condition: EXCELLENT Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
