Inland Division of General Motors Original M1 Carbine WWII in .30 Carbine Caliber
Description: This is a completely original Inland carbine with a barrel manufacture date of 2/43, meaning that the rifle could have been assembled in February of 1943, or maybe even at some later date. On 25 November 1942 Inland received its first contract with the Ordnance Department to produce 336,696 M1 Carbines for use in WWII. This carbine's serial number falls within that number, which was achieved in June of 1943. Allowing for the usual maximum delay of 2 months from this gun's barrel date of 2 February 1944 to installation of a receiver, April 1944 seems to be more reasonable than June, especially since manufacturers rarely build in strict alphabetical order. The first things of note on this carbine are: the Type 2 stock, with its high wood; an oval sling aperture; the Type 1 barrel band swivel marked UI; the OI marking in the sling slot on the left side; There is no ordnance cartouche anywhere on this carbine and there never has been, which happens occasionally we have been told; the recoil plate upside down DI marking; and the Type 1 rear sight is staked. The handguard has 2 rivets and is marked OI on the inside. The typical N for Neidner Rifle Corporation is clearly struck on the front sight as well. As for the rest of the parts, the following are all marked with Inland codes, except for the slide, which resisted removal without force that we are not inclined to apply. The muzzle erosion measures .301 with a Brownell's gauge. Headspace passed the Go and No Go tests, but users reading this should know that testing headspace is like checking the chamber of a gun before handling it - it's mandatory. Please view the pictures. They are an integral part of this description. Thanks for looking.
