JOHNSON AUTOMATICS MODEL 1941 30-06
Description: This is a SCARCE - and excellent example of a Johnson Automatics Model 1941 - 30.06 semi automatic rifle. Unrestored, well kept, with low Serial Number 5596. It has the standard 22 inch barrel. The top of the receiver has the clear, crisp, and correct roll-stamped "CAL. 30-'06 SEMI-AUTO. "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" - MODEL OF 1941 - MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A. These lines are over serial number 5596. The five-line patent markings are also very clear and crisp. The right rear side of the receiver correctly states CRANSTON ARMS CO. It is stamped with the inverted triangle. A small five-pointed star, used by Dutch inspectors is clearly stamped above the Cranston marking as this piece likely saw action in Indonesia. The face of the barrel collar is very clearly and correctly stamped with the caliber ".30 06" above the barrel. Large amount of original finish remains. This Model 1941 is beautiful. The bore is immaculate, shiny throughout with no rust, pitting or corrosion. The finish is original with a few historical rubbed areas. Stock is very good with no large dings. The top of the reciever has been drilled for scope mounts and the functional rear sight appears to be newer. This Johnson Model 1941 rifle in .30-06 caliber is in excellent condition all-around, retaining the original factory finish on all of the metal parts and with a beautiful original stock. The Johnson Model 1941 rifle narrowly missed out on being chosen as the main battle rifle of the U.S. Military during WW2. It was in competition with the M1 Garand prior to the war, and lost out only because of some concerns regarding the durability of the rotary magazine housing and the inability of the Johnson M1941 to handle a standard blade bayonet. The recoiling barrel design could only function properly with a lightweight spike type bayonet, a standard blade bayonet's weight impeded the barrels movement too much. Despit not being chosen as the main battle rifle for U.S. forces, a number of Johnson rifles and machine guns ended up in the fighting of WW2. The United States Marine Corps bought a number of Johnsons to supplement the M1 Garands they were receiving, as they were not getting enough M1 Garands to sufficiently arm their troops fighting in the Pacific Theatre. These Johnson Model 1941 rifles and light machine guns served the U.S.M.C. well, with a number of U.S.M.C. troops finding that they preferred it to the Garand. The elite American and Canadian commando unit called the First Special Service Force otherwise known as "The Devil's Brigade" used the Johnson Model 1941 Light Machine Gun to great effect in Italy and the Mediterranean Theatre. The First Special Service Force was armed with a variety of non-standard and limited-issue weapons, and the Johnson in particular greatly increased the firepower of the unit. As you can see from the pictures, this rifle is exceptionally clean and attractive. The bore in this Johnson is excellent, mirror-bright with sharp rifling and no visible imperfections. The original stock set is also in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major wear. The forearm and buttstock are a perfect match in both color and degree of wear, showing only some very minor handling/storage marks. All of the controls on this Johnson rifle are in perfect working order, and the rotary bolt action locks into battery perfectly.
