** SOLD ** Springfield Model 1884 Trap Door Single Shot Rifle in .45-70 Government **US Marked**
Description: Here we have a genuine US marked Springfield Model 1884 Trap Door hinged breechlock rifle in .45-70 caliber. The Springfield model 1884 was one of the "Trapdoor Springfield" rifles. It was an improved replacement for the previous longarm of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Springfield model 1873. The model 1884 traces its roots back to the design of the Springfield 1873. The model 1884 incorporated a significant number of improvements that had been made between 1878 and 1879. It also featured a serrated trigger that had been incorporated into the Springfield rifle design in 1883. The 1884 saw action in Indian Wars, Spanish–American War, and the Philippine–American War. This particular example has the wear that one would expect on a service rifle of this age. The metal has worn to a handsome warm grey patina and the wood has some pressure and handling marks but nothing serious. Funtionally the rifle is excellent and the bore is good with good rifling. The ladder style rear sight is functioning like it should. Being chambered in .45-70 this fine Springfield would be a blast to shoot and it would also be a great addition to a collection of US military arms.
