US Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle by Springfield Armory

Description:
Serial #1548, .50-70 Gov’t., 33" barrel with a very good bore that has some mild pitting along its length, including within the grooves. This rifle has a mostly mottled gray patina with spots of dark brown freckling along the barrel, while the receiver and breechblock have an overall dark plum-brown patina. The 1863-dated Springfield lock has an overall mottled gray and plum-brown patina with small spots of surface oxidation and pinprick pitting throughout. The action locks tightly, and is fully functional, while the barrel muzzle was given a very nice, professionally done shallow-beveled target crown at some point in its life. The walnut stock has minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered about, with a still legible "ESA" (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche on the left side, and a small rack number on the top of the wrist just aft of the tang, "15". The buttplate has a mostly dark brown patina with light-moderate pitting in spots. A correct ramrod is included. This is a good-near very good example of a Model 1868 Trapdoor, and would make a good representative addition to a collection. Antique;
