CLONE to the RUSSIAN Model 1938 Carbine

Here we present a C&R Mosin-Nagant 91/59 Rifle, made in 1943 at the Izhevsk Arsenal and converted circa 1959 or shortly thereafter. Prior to becoming a Model 91/59, this rifle was a Model 91/30, which is a variant of the original Model 1891.

The Model 1891/59 carbine, commonly referred to as the “91/59” was created by shortening the barrels on the existing Model 1891/30 rifles to carbine length with the rear sight numbers partially ground off to reflect the reduced range of these rifles. These rifles are almost clones of the Model 38 with the only primary difference being the ground off rear sight. The Model 1938 carbine was based on the M1891/30 design that was produced from 1939 to 1945 at the Izhevsk arsenal and in 1940 and 1944 at Tula. They were intended for use by second-echelon and noncombatant troops. So, it was essentially a M1891/30 with a shortened barrel and shortened stock. The M38 was replaced by the Model 44 carbine in 1944.

It was initially thought that Bulgaria or another Soviet satellite country performed the conversions in preparation for a Western invasion that never came. Recent evidence suggests that the M91/59 was indeed produced in Bulgaria from Soviet-supplied wartime production M91/30s. Total production of the 91/59 is uncertain with figures as low as one million and as high as three million have appeared in firearm literature.

The Soviet Model 1891 known in the West as the Mosin–Nagant and in Russia as Mosin's rifle is a five-shot, bolt action, internal magazine fed military rifle developed from 1882 to 1891 and used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and various other nations. It is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history with over 37 million units having been made since its inception in 1891, and, in spite of its age, it has been used in various conflicts around the world up to the present day.

The overall condition is fine. Excellent action. Bright bore. The stock is in fine shape with less than average handling and storage wear. Numbers match. “1943” dated barrel. Sharp markings. “CAI” marked barrel. This example has been nicely refinished.
