WW1 Russian Contract 1915 Westinghouse Model 1891 Mosin Nagant in 7.62x54R
** NON-IMPORT American-made Mosin M91! **
Description: Unlike most of the Westinghouse manufactured M91 Mosin Nagants we encounter in the U.S. without import stamps, this example actually went overseas to Russia and somehow made it back to the States. Our best guess is that it was brought home as a trophy with a U.S. soldier returning home from World War 1. New England Westinghouse along with Remington U.M.C. were contracted by Imperial Russia to manufacture the Model 1891 Mosin Nagant rifle to supplement their own production of the weapon for use in World War 1. Both firms made significant numbers of these rifles before problems within the Russian procurement system and America's involvement in World War 1 ended production for the Russians. Interestingly enough, both firms also made these Mosin Nagants for U.S. contracts with 200,000 supplied by Westinghouse and 78,950 supplied by Remington U.M.C. This particular rifle is an early production rifle for the Russian contract. It has all of the Russian inspection and acceptance proofs on the barrel and receiver tang. The bolt, floorplate, and buttplate, are not matching but are certainly original parts nad appear to have been on the rifle for many many decades. Interestingly enough, the last three digits of the serial number on the floorplate (462) match the last three digits on the barrel but not the first three. All of the blue finish on the rifle is original, it has not been refinished or touched-up and it is very attractive overall. The patina on the rifle in general is nice and consistent, it certainly looks better than you would expect a World War 1 combat-used rifle made in 1915 to look like. As you can see in the pictures, the original blue finish on the receiver, magazine housing, and barrel is very strong in places. The muzzle-end of the barrel shows finish wear consistent with socket bayonet usage. You can make out where the bayonet wore the finish thin from being mounted and dismounted, as well as from being affixed while marching or in combat. The bore in this Westinghouse M91 is in good shape overall. The grooves in the rifling look dark, but the lands are bright and strong. There are no visible bulges, dents, or other major imperfections. We have no doubt that this M91 would be an excellent shooter if the new owner is so inclined. The stock set on this M91 is in excellent condition. The solid Walnut stock itself is an original Westinghouse stock and while it has been lightly sanded at some point, you can still just make out the double-circle cartouche on the right side of the butt. The wood has a great dark red-brown color to it, and it is free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. The handguard is lighter in color but is also 100% solid, with no cracks, repairs, or major damage. All of the original barrel bands, stock hardware, and wire sling mounts are still in place and in good condition. The original cleaning rod is still in place and threaded in securely. All of the controls on this N.E.W. M91 are in perfect working order, as well as the original adjustable rear sight. The bolt works smoothly by hand and goes into battery perfectly. All in all, this is a very nice example of this scarce variation. If you have been looking for an investment worthy Mosin Nagant for your collection this Westinghouse Russian Contract model would be an excellent choice. A Russian M91 Mosin Nagant with no import stamp is hard to find in itself, much less one of these American-made models! This is a very interesting piece of U.S./Russian military history.
