Near MINT Unfired Mossberg M44 WWII U.S. 22 Training Rifle C. 1944
Description: Near MINT Unfired Mossberg M44 WWII U.S. 22 Training Rifle
Just acquired along with a fine collection of U.S. military firearms is this classic Mossberg Model M44 U.S. Training Rifle. It is one of the classic American military rimfire training rifles of World War II. Built by O.F. Mossberg & Sons in New Haven, Connecticut, these rifles were designed to teach basic marksmanship to recruits before moving them on to full-power service rifles like the M1903A3 Springfield and M1 Garand.
This rifle is especially desirable to collectors because it is “U.S. Property” marked , near mint and apparently unfired and retaining essentially all original finish.
Not rebuilt or refinished it has only minor storage marks and is complete military configuration with the 26" barrel. Mossberg manufactured the Model 44 U.S. from January 1943 through August 1944, producing roughly 58,000 rifles for the War Department.
This serial number 165528, falls into the later WWII production period and was almost certainly manufactured in 1944.
Key characteristics of the Model 44 U.S. include:
Heavy 26-inch barrel for training accuracy
Bolt-action repeating mechanism
Aperture military-style target sights
Full-size stock to mimic service rifles
Chambered in .22 Long Rifle
Issued to military training programs, ROTC units, and later civilian marksmanship organizations
Collector-grade condition, it retains 100% original finish, mint bore, original stock finish and no wear. Original magazine correct Mossberg military aperture sights , sharp “U.S. Property” markings .Original sling swivels and military sling and comes with two (2) magazines.
The Mossberg M44 series also has a reputation for outstanding accuracy. Many shooters consider them among the finest U.S. military .22 trainers ever produced. One would be hard pressed to find a superior specimen.
