JONATHAN BROWNING MOUNTAIN RIFLE, STEEL FURNITURE, 54 CALIBER
Description:
54 Caliber Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle, Traditional Percussion Muzzle Loader, Steel Furniture. I remember when these first came out in about 1970. Browning made them for about 10 years. They are considered to be extremely well built premium muzzle loading hunting rifles. They are copies of the rifle that Jonathan Browning was famous for building in the early-middle 1800s. He made them individually in his gunshop. He was the father of John M. Browning, the great firearms genius inventor. I believe that these rifles were produced entirely in Utah, in a factory in Salt Lake City, I think. I purchased a 50 caliber in 1973 and shot my first Muzzle Loading Mule Deer Buck. It was a great rifle.
I purchased this one used in about 1986 in St George, Utah. I was tired of mediocre quality in most of the commercial muzzle loaders available at the time. I was told that it was designed to shoot a patched ball but I had excellent results using a short Maxiball. This one has the browned steel furniture instead of brass and has what looks like a pewter forend. It is more muted than the brass, but both versions look great. The metal has the original browned finish and the walnut stock has the original oil finish. It is in excellent condition and everything works properly. The single set trigger contributes to accuracy and the sights are excellent. The bore is very good and was always cleaned and oiled immediately after firing. The riflings are sharp. The muzzle is factory contoured for easier loading but I always need a seater to get the projectile started. If your state has a primitive weapons season and you need a powerful black powder rifle for deer or elk or even buffalo, take a good look at this one. These nice ones are even becoming collectable and the 54 caliber ones are harder to find.
