Custom Made Hawkins Rifle with Bill Large Barrel in .58 Caliber
Description:
This Hawkins Percussion half stock rifle is marked "JWF" for Joe W. Farmer (1937-2010) of Waynesville, NC. Joe, along with several other muzzel loading gun makers, was featured in "Fox Fire" volume V. The "Fox Fire" series of books were documentaries of life in the Smokey Mountains. This accurately designed and made rifle has a Bill Large barrel. Bill Large was on of the first modern makers of muzzle loading rifle barrels. His barrels were highly sought after in the 50's until he died. He was considered the best. This is one of his early barrels and is marked W. M. Large and has 8 lands and groves that are sharp and the bore is clean and very good condition. The heavy barrel is 36 inches long and the gun is heavy as were a good many of the originals at 11 plus pounds, It has the classic double triggers and is iron trimmed. An excellent rifle for the modern Mountain man.
