Green River Rifle Works, Leman Indian Rifle
These fullstock Leman replicas were designed directly following an original Leman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania Trade rifle. Leman made both half and fullstock rifle for trade with the western tribes. These rifles were very popular and many examples remain in museums and private collections. The original fullstock rifle are scarce and desirable.
Full stocked in Maple with 30" octagon barrel, 1~1/16" across the flats. The percussion rifle has a single trigger, with brass mountings: ramrod thimbles, trigger guard and buttplate. The barrel sports traditional open iron barrel sights. The bore is rifled .50 Caliber with seven (7) sharp lands & grooves and deep cut rifling. The rifle weighs 8lbs. 14 oz. and the length of pull is 14".
There is no firing corrosion around the nipple or the lock. The nipple is slightly tarnished and the iron blade, copper base front sight may have been slightly filed. The stock has a few small dents, the ramrod does not show signs of use.
I never call any used gun "unfired" but my guess is that this one was sighted in and put-up. It has an almost plain maple stock with a bit of fiddleback figure and the identifying greenish colored wood. This color is a product of the stain used in those days. Initially stained brown, after exposure to sunlight the stocks lightened and turned slightly green. Most all GRRW maple stocks show this color and identifies them from that era. There are no markings of any kind that I can find on this rifle except the initials BKC and 1987 scratched on the back side of the lock.
I found the guy online who built this rifle from a kit in 1987. He confirmed making a slightly oversize lock plate to cover a poor inlet and that the rifle shot extremely well. The craftsmanship is high quality throughout. GRRW barrels have a reputation as tack drivers.
