Left-Handed. 50 Southern Mountain Rifle
Description: Reduced. This Left-Handed .50 SouthernMountainRifle has a 41 1/2” DeHaas octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. According to the consignor, this unmarked rifle was built by respected gunsmith Leonard Day, possibly using a parts kit provided by the customer. I am in no way implying that this is a scratch built Leonard Day rifle. The barrel retains about 98% original maker brown finish with a touch of high edge wear. The lockplate, triggerguard, buttplate and toe plate, and small parts retain about 90-93% maker brown finish which is lightly thinning to a gray-brown patina with wear to gray on the toe and heel of the buttplate and on the high edges, and some scattered speckles of light oxidation. The lock (unmarked, but possibly a Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle lock) features a bridled frizzen, a pronounced swan neck cock and a lockplate ending in a distinct teat. Appears to have never had a flint mounted. The attractive hardwood (Maple?) fullstock with graceful right side cheekpiece rates about excellent with a few light handling marks and a neat cylindrical grease hole in the left side of the buttstock. This appears to be a Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle stock. The edges of the stock flats are crisp and and there is attractive grain figure throughout. LOP is 13 5/8". The rifle is sighted with a brass blade front and a full buckhorn rear, and the double set triggers (R.E. DAVIS) and action are both crisp. Weighs about 9 lbs.lovely contemporary flintlock built by a respected riflesmith. $1150 + Shipping. SOLD |
