PENNSYLVANIA STYLE FLINTLOCK LONGRIFLE SIGNED HACKER MARTIN WITH RAISE CARVED TIGER MAPLE STOCK. CIRCA 1950’S-60’S.
Description:
PENNSYLVANIA STYLE FLINTLOCK LONGRIFLE SIGNED HACKER MARTIN WITH RAISE CARVED TIGER MAPLE STOCK. CIRCA 1950’S-60’S. 62” overall with 46 ¼” octagon .44 caliber rifled, sighted barrel signed in a brass panel “HACKER MARTIN MADE FOR LEONARD MEADOWS”. Lock plate unsigned. Full length tiger maple stock with ornate open work engraved brass patch box and engraved mounts. Oval silver wrist escutcheon and silver eight pointed star cheek rest inlay. Profusely raise carved in floral and geometric designs in the fashion of late 18th and early 19th Century Pennsylvania makers from Lebanon and Lancaster counties. Excellent condition overall and with an aged look that is quite pleasing. Working order and excellent bore. Original wood ramrod. One of the more opulent examples of work by this well known early to mid 20th Century maker who worked in both Virginia and in Tennessee. Martin was famous for making most of his rifles and pistols entirely by hand. He cut and cured his own wood and forged and bored his own barrels. He made rifles on order sometimes noting who the rifles were made for as in this case for Leonard Meadows also a known longrifle maker from West Virginia. Hacker Martin is sometimes referred to as the last of the First Generation of longrifle makers. He died in 1970. Particularly nice example of his work.
