PRE CIVIL WAR AMERICAN IRON EPROUVETTE MORTAR - CANNON
Description:
A Rare19th Century American Eprouvette Iron Mortar dating prior to the civil war – Circa 1840’s. This mortar came out of Tennessee many years ago and was reportedly used by the Confederacy during the war. The iron base measures 22 x 12 in, tube is about 21 x 11 in, and the bore is approximately 6 inches. The custom wooden plinth measures about 29 x 18 with casters under the skirt in order for it to roll and move easier. There are similar examples of this scarce mortar flanking the base of the flagpole at the Washington Navy Yard. It is in a survivor with signs or age and use with what appears to be a stress crack at one side. Overall a rare piece of affordable American Artillery with great eye appeal!
