PRE CONTEMPORARY TENNESSEE KENTUCKY STYLE FLINTLOCK LONGRIFLE RIFLE BY ROYLAND SOUTHGATE CIRCA 1940’S-50’S.

PRE CONTEMPORARY TENNESSEE KENTUCKY STYLE FLINTLOCK LONGRIFLE RIFLE BY ROYLAND SOUTHGATE CIRCA 1940’S-50’S. 57” overall with antique circa 1820’s-30’s original 41” octagon .36 cal. rifled barrel signed on top flat “L.R.” in crude block letters. Southgate lock, maple stock and brass patchbox and mounts. Signed in script “R. SOUTHGATE” on patchbox lid spring. Nice very good plus condition overall with the barrel having old pitting dating to the original period of use. Very probably a restoration project by Southgate for a customer who wanted his ancestral rifle restocked. The fact it does not bear the usual Southgate serial number also gives credence to this hypothesis. Stock and mounts properly aged to look original. Southgate is considered to be a pre-contemporary Tennessee longrifle maker and his rifles are highly regarded by collectors.
