Antonio Zoli .58 Caliber, Percussion Rifle, aka Zoli Buffalo Rifle or Western Rifle
Description:
This Antonio Zoli .58 caliber, half-stock, percussion sporting rifle, commonly referred to in collector circles as a Zoli Buffalo Rifle or Western Rifle. It has a 26-inch round barrel, and is equipped with a single trigger, a front-sight blade, and an adjustable rear sight. The stock is walnut. It has a high luster finish and is accented with various brass parts – butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod pipes (thimbles), wedge escutcheons, patch-box plate, and ramrod. The lock plate and hammer are case hardened giving them attractive case colors. The lock plate is inscribed with the American eagle with a shield in front. The brass ramrod is missing the screw tip that simply screws into the ramrod – easily replaceable. The total weight of the rifle is 8 pounds, 11.6 ounces, and its overall length is 42 inches. The length of pull is about 13 ¾. There are no box, papers, or accessories with this rifle. Based on the year of proof testing code, AC, this gun was manufactured in 1977.
The only markings on the rifle are on top and left side of the barrel just forward of the tang. The top of the barrel is stamped with “Antonio Zoli & Co.” (the Z was poorly stamped and almost not visible), followed by “MADE IN ITALY”. The left side of the barrel top is stamped with “.58 Caliber”, followed by “BLACK POWDER ONLY”. The side of the barrel is stamped with three common proof markings – 1) the Gardone Proof Test mark (a shield with the crossed rifles with fixed bayonets under a five-point star in a wheel (or gear)), 2) Black Powder Proofing mark, 3) PN beneath a star – P stands for polvere (powder), N stands for nere (black), 3) Year of proof testing signified by “AC” inside a rectangle. AC is the code for 1977. The serial number is stamped to the right of the AC To the right of the serial number is the Antonio Zoli logo – a bow and arrow pointing toward te front of the gun.
The overall condition of this rifle is 99 percent. The barrel is in excellent condition, retaining all of its bluing. There is no rust on any of the metal. The walnut stock is also in excellent condition with one half-inch blemish on the left side of the stock about 1¾ inch from the butt and ¾ inch from the top of the stock. The checkering on the stock is in excellent condition. The checkering is deep and crisp with no sign of wear or any other damage.
