CHARLES NEWTON RIFLE
- .256 NEWTON - DOUBLE SQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER ACTION
Description: CHARLES NEWTON RIFLE - 256 NEWTON CALIBER: SOLD! This presents an absolutely stunningly beautiful, original condition 100 year old example of Charles Newton’s highly innovative, turn-of-the-century bolt action rifle, chambered by “the father of high velocity” for the potent .256 Newton cartridge of his own design in 1913, well over 100 years ago. The .256 Newton is capable of propelling a .265 dia. 123 gr. bullet at 3,105 fps with 2,632 ft. lbs. of energy. In his 1962 book, "HANDBOOK FOR SHOOTERS & RELOADERS", famous gunsmith and barrel maker, P O Ackley said of the .256 Newton cartridge: "This is one of the finest cartridges in its class. Both the cartridge and rifle were many years ahead of their time!" This rifle was built on a basic Newton double square bridge action design, now a classic gem, alone, which is highly sought by custom rifle enthusiasts. In addition to the design of his double square bridge action, Newton’s bolt action rifle incorporates other unique innovations of Newton’s own ingenuity, which improve accuracy and enhance the action's strength and utility. Such genius innovations include a) the doubl square bridge action design; b) several cuts in the bolt locking lugs, which interface with complimentary ridges in the receiver ring, promoting a more stable, stronger interface and lock-up of the bolt with the receiver, c) Newton’s ingenious take-down feature, which allows the user to release the floor plate, turn it, like a wrench, release and remove the barreled action from the stock for safe, compact and convenient storage or transport, and d) a unique optional fold-down peep sight mounted on the rear of the firing pin striker, in addition to the barrel-mounted rear sight, plus e) Newton’s creative chambering of the rifle to his, then, state-of-the-art high velocity cartridge, the .256 Newton. Charles Newton’s 1913 cartridge design provides ballistics comparable to that of the modern-day 25-06 and other similar high-velocity center fire rifle cartridges, causing Newton to be known as “the father of high velocity”! All such unique features are incorporated, along with double-set triggers, a beautiful classic stock, with its schnabel fore-end and beautifully applied hand-cut, sharp checkering. The metal is in fine condition, also, displaying limited edge wear. No significant wear nor erosion is observed in the still sharp lands and grooves of the 24” barrel. All of the above features are incorporated in the rifle, a beautiful, estimated 95% condition firearm which, very obviously, was carefully maintained and cared for by its previous owner(s) There are no really significant flaws in the walnut stock nor finish, a couple of small, minor scratches, and minimal blue edge wear on the metal of the subject rifle. There is a small, precisely located and applied notch on the bottom the stock, immediately behind the pistol grip which, given its location and the condition of the rifle, is indicative of a trophy achieved, rather than an accidental ding! This is an absolutely beautiful, classic rifle, which appears to remain in its original condition and which should appeal to the most discriminating rifle collector and shooter! Included with the rifle is a three die set of RCBS loading dies. New 256 Newton cartridge cases are currently available from Roberson Cartridge Company. Of course, 256 Newton cases may be formed, easily, from 270 Winchester or 30 06 Springfield and similar cases, simply, by setting back the shoulder and trimming to length. This rifle is a rare, 100 plus year old gem, one of 2,400 total rifles made, but one of a much more limited quantity of Newton rifles built on his double square bridge action. This .256 Newton rifle was intended by the genius of Charles Newton to be shot and enjoyed by the most discriminating shooter, seeking ultimate ballistic performance! More information on the Newton rifle is available from “The Mauser Archive” book, written by Jon speed and from several handbooks written about the Newton rifle. Accordingly, this presents a rare opportunity for one lucky rifle collector and high velocity shooting enthusiast to own one of, if not the finest Newton rifles in existence. This is among the finest condition, if not the finest, Charles Newton rifles in existence, in superb shooting and highly collectible condition for the most demanding custom rifle enthusiasts!
