About Us: I have been collecting firearms for over 40 years. My interests are Winchester rifles in models 1892 and 1894 especially with shorter than standard barrels. I have also written four books on Newton rifles and have interest in all models of those rifles. newtonrifles
First Model 1916 Newton Rifle #39 .256 Newton caliber
Description: This First Model 1916 Newton rifle is serial number 39 and is stamped with the number in 12 places. The rifle was most probably made in 1916 while Charles Newton still had control of the company. The rifle has several of the early design features seen on these early rifles such as serrations on the bottom and top of the bolt knob, early ejector style, larger Schnabel on the fire end, non-mobile ejector, and has one of the barrels made by Marlin with square cut rifling. The pictures show how the rear sight covers part of the barrel marking and the 0-0-0 marking. Either Newton and Harry Pope did not have enough of their segmental rifled barrels ready this early in production or the buyer could have requested a square cut rifled barrel. The rifle has a bolt peep and non-original sling swivels. The stock is good with the checkering showing some signs of wear. The stock has a hairline crack behind the magazine and on the left side. The buttplate, grip cap, trigger guard and floor plate are gray patina. The receiver is mostly gray with 10% blue remaining. The barrel is 60% blue and has a bright bore. The rifle has the original front and rear sights. The double set triggers work well. This book is pictured in three Newton books. The Newton Rifle First edition page 92, The Newton Rifle Second edition page 94 and The Newton Handbook page 41. Buyer pays exact shipping and insurance costs.
