“Back in the day" it was fairly common for department stores to market firearms under their own “house" brand. J.C. Penney, Sears and Western Auto are a few of the stores that come to mind. These “house" brand rifles were often made by Marlin, Savage, Mossberg and Winchester were a few of the manufacturers to supply firearms to department stores.
The rifle that we have on consignment is stamped Pioneer – Gamble Stores Incorporated – Model 25. Beyond that, it’s hard to come up with a lot of documentation on these particular rifles. Savage made some rifles for Gamble Stores or Gamble – Skogmo but Marlin contributed some as well. As far as the Model 25? We don’t know.
These were very simple “boys" rifles. The action is controlled by a bolt that simply chambers and then ejects the single round inserted into the chamber. Once the bolt handle is closed, the bolt itself is pulled to the rear to cock the rifle.
Although these were a very basic rifle, this one is in amazing condition. It does not have a serial number (nor is one required) as this is a pre-1968 rifle. The one piece wooden stock is in Excellent condition with only the slightest signs of use. The finish on the barrel is also Excellent and is almost entire intact. The rear sight is adjustable and the front is a fixed brass bead.
If you’d like a reminder of simpler times or a good looking rifle for training a new shooter, the Model 25 may be what you’re after.
