James Purdey & Sons 600 NE.
Description:
Completed in 1991, this extraordinary J. Purdey & Sons .600 Nitro Express double rifle represents the pinnacle of British gunmaking and one of the rarest rifles ever produced by the famed London maker, with reportedly fewer than twenty examples completed. Combining immense stopping power with exceptional craftsmanship, the rifle features blued steel chopperlump barrels fitted with Purdey’s distinctive clamshell front sight protector, two-leaf express sights, automatic ejectors, and London nitro proofs dated 1988.
The barrels are mounted to a massive brush-bright finished Beesley self-opening sidelock action with third fastener, lavishly engraved by Master Engraver Rashid El Hadi in 1990. Deep floral scrollwork intertwines with dramatic elephant head motifs across the action, fences, and furniture, with “600/NITRO” and the serial number inlaid in gold. Additional features include bushed firing pins, double triggers, cocking indicators, a bolted safety, and beautifully figured walnut furniture with multi-point checkering, engraved trapdoor grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece, gold oval, and engraved skeleton buttplate.
The rifle is accompanied by its original oak and elephant hide takedown case lined in red baize and complete with accessories including cleaning tools, turnscrews, snap caps, and an oil bottle. Purdey factory records confirm completion in 1991 along with the rifle’s specifications, “old silver” finish, and engraving by R. L. Hadi. Length of pull measures 14 3/4 inches and weight is 15 pounds, 1 ounce.
Condition:
Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue and brushed bright finishes with minor handling evidence, some spots of dried grease on the action, a few minor marks on the wood, and sharp fine checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
