James Purdey & Sons 500 NE.
Description:
Completed in 2007, this spectacular J. Purdey & Sons .500 Nitro Express sidelock double rifle is a true London Best and a stunning example of modern British fine gunmaking at its highest level. Built as an exhibition-quality rifle, it features 24 inch chopperlump barrels with express sights regulated for 50 and 100 yards, automatic ejectors, sideclips, third fastener, articulated front trigger, and Purdey’s famed Beesley self-opening sidelock action.
The rifle is finished in elegant coin silver and lavishly engraved by legendary Master Engraver Phil Coggan with deep relief scrollwork and remarkable African game scenes depicting the “Big Five,” highlighted with extensive gold inlay throughout the action, quarter rib, trigger guard, and furniture. Additional custom touches include a carved metal buttplate, engraved pistol grip cap, gold inlaid “RML” initials in the stock, and beautifully figured honey-colored walnut with fine multi-point checkering.
Factory records confirm completion on July 20, 2007, with a weight of 12 lbs. 6 3/4 oz. and a 14 1/2 inch stock. Combining extraordinary artistry, rarity, and dangerous game performance, this rifle represents everything expected of a London Best double rifle and would stand as a centerpiece in even the finest sporting arms collections.
Condition:
Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue, coin, and gold finishes with minor handling evidence, a few freckles of spotting near the heel of the buttplate, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
