Purdey Muzzleloading Double Rifle
Description: James Purdey Percussion double rifle, SN 6076. Built in 1861 and Marked J. Purdey 514 1/2 Oxford St, London. Fully engraved with high grade walnut checkered stock. Barrels are 30 3/8" long. Bores are good with no pitting and measure approximately 0.424" with two groove rifling for a belted ball. According to The Early Purdeys, by L. Patrick Unsworth ,page 140, this gun was owned by Sir Francis Sykes. Account states that he used this gun to hunt moose, wapiti, caribou, bear, and American Buffalo. As is mentioned in the book, this gun has double set triggers. A rather unusual feature. Both set triggers work well. A fine example of 19th century Purdey craftmanship. Gun weighs 10 lbs. with a 13 1/2" LOP to front trigger.Folding leaf and ladder rear sights. Patch box. Hammer block half cock safeties. Checkered steel butt plate. Ramrod is in good shape. Sling Swivels.
