Remington delivered 12,501 58 caliber percussion muzzle-loading 1863 contract rifles to the Army between 1862 and 1865. These are often called ""Zouave Rifles"". This rifle is in very good condition. The 33"" barrel, with 3-groove rifling, has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The barrel has the V over P over eagle on the left and 1863 at the top. The lower left flat is marked STEEL followed by R.K.A. inspector's initials. The barrel has a light brown patina with very light firing roughness around the bolster. It has a blade front sight, three leaf Civil War rear sight, and an added fixed rear sight just to the rear of the rear band. The lock and hammer have a light brown patina. The lock is marked with REMINGTON'S over ILLION, N.Y. followed by the eagle over U.S. with 1863 at the tail. The brass furniture has an even aged patina. The stock is fine with sharp edges, two strong cartouches, usage dents and dings with the biggest being on the left at the ramrod spoon pin. The action functions correctly. A Zouave rifle is an essential ingredient of every U.S. rifle and Civil War collection.
