Single Shot Falling Block CREEDMOOR TARGET Rifle
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Sporting and Target Rifle, made circa 1883-88 in Ilion, New York, with approximately 10,000 manufactured during its production run between 1883 and 1907. Lewis Hepburn, the inventor of this rifle, was superintendent and supervising engineer of Remington's mechanical department and a member of the American Creedmoor International Shooting Team. In the 1880s, sophistication grew in the eastern United States. Towns and cities were urbanized, labor unions organized, education became important, and sports were popular. Among the latter, target shooting gathered thousands of adherents, particularly as the major rifle companies began to produce marvels of technology. This rifle was part of a series that gained popularity into and past the late 19th century. Its design reflects the technological advancements of the time, catering to the growing interest in competitive shooting sports.
Hepburn patented the design in 1879.
The rifle was available in several configurations, and a host of calibers could be ordered. This model, the No. 3 Sporting, could be had with 26, 28, or 30 inch barrels. The gun proved a popular target rifle and a number of variants were introduced before it was pulled from the market at the beginning of the 20th century. This gun is a .45-70 No. 3 with a 28 inch heavy octagonal barrel.
This example has a dovetailed globe front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear sight, and tang-mounted Vernier peep sight, with “45.-70”, “E.S.” and a matching serial number on the underside on the 1.15” diameter barrel, and “HEPBURN PAT./OCT. 7TH, 1879,” on the left side of the receiver. It sports a smooth forearm with casehardened metal Schnabel top, and a checkered semi-pistol grip buttstock with a smooth carbine-style buttplate.
This example is refinished and remains fine. Excellent action. Shiny bore with sharp rifling. Markings are clean and crisp. Fine stock. Nice adjustable rear peep. Checkered wrist.
