EARLY REMINGTON NEW YORK STATE .50-70 ROLLINGBLOCK MILITARY RIFLE. This one has the last patent date on the upper tang of Nov. 7, 1871, which puts it in the first contract for the state of New York in 1871. There were later orders with later patent dates. There were a number of variations in finish on these arms and this one appears to have been left in the “white” at the factory, meaning the barrel was not blued. This was a common variation. The barrel now shows a nice antique gray/brown uncleaned patina. The receiver is a similar uncleaned gray/brown. Original military style tangent rear sight. Has the correct high hammer and the correct action in which the hammer is cocked fully for loading and when the breech block is pushed forward on the loaded round, the hammer drops about 1/8th inch into a safety position- I’ve never known why this feature wasn’t incorporated into all Rollingblocks, otherwise once the cartridge is loaded and the breech block is closed it is ready to fire unless the hammer is manually lowered to the half-cock position. Stock and forend show normal light handling and have never been sanded or refinished. The stock has a sharp cartouche at the wrist on the left side along with typical unit markings on the top of the butt plate, a rack number “69” stamped into the left rear of the butt stock and small inspector initials behind the lower tang along with a “D” unit stamping in the right side of the forearm ahead of the receiver. Action is tight and functions correctly, all markings are fine and the bore is bright and excellent. Cleaning rod is intact. A good 125 year old exampled that has not been cleaned or messed with. Like Trapdoor Springfields, these are still a bargain.
