Description:
Museum Quality WWI U.S. Model 1917 Rifle by Remington
Offered here for sale and just acquired from a very prestigious 6 decades arms collection is this beautiful Remington made U.S. Model of 1917 rifle.
This is an all original
U.S. Model of 1917 (M1917) rifle manufactured by
Remington Arms during the height of American World War I production.
History
The U.S. Model 1917 traces its ancestry to the British Pattern 1914 Enfield. When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, there were not enough M1903 Springfield rifles to arm the rapidly expanding Army. Rather than retooling factories already producing the British rifle, the government adapted the design to fire the U.S. .30-06 cartridge.
Approximately 2.2 million M1917 rifles were produced, and by the end of World War I, roughly
75% of the American Expeditionary Forces carried the M1917 rather than the M1903 Springfield. The rifle earned an outstanding reputation for strength, reliability, and excellent battlefield accuracy.
Possibly an unissued U.S. Model 1917 .30-06 rifle it has serial number 498913 on receiver and a 27" Remington barrel which is stamped 7-18. The stock has proper "eagle" cartouches in two places with inspector number. The top rear of buttstock is also stamped with a small "x" and "m". It also has a proper military sling marked "HOYT 1918". Overall it retains virtually 100% of original blued finish with the only slightest of wear on the bolt from retracting and probably cleaning but not from use. Bore is MINT.
The production tables place serial number
498,913 in
late July 1918, matching the barrel date exactly . It is highly likely that the receiver and barrel are original to one another and assembled within days or weeks of each other. Original M1917s were polished and rust blued. Most surviving rifles were later parkerized during WWII rebuild programs. Retaining virtually all of the original blue is very unusual.
Only slight polishing from operating the action is typical of rifles that were test fired but never issued. The eagle acceptance stamps with inspector numbers are exactly as applied and present on this untouched World War I stock.
The small
"X" and
"M" on the buttstock are also known inspection or factory assembly markings. HOYT was one of the principal wartime contractors producing leather slings in 1918 and this original 1918-dated HOYT sling alone is a coveted and valuable one adding to the beauty of the piece.
Untouched M1917 rifles are becoming increasingly scarce because most were rebuilt for later service or modified over the past century.
One of the finest we have had in a great deal of time.
