Remington Model 600 Mohawk 18.5” 308 Winchester Very Good Condition
Description: This is a nice example of one of Remington’s more interesting rifles. The Model 600 and 600 Mohawk were designed as a guide guns. The standard 600 had a ventilated rib while the 600 Mohawk did not. Both featured an 18.5” barrel and a forward sweeping bolt hand for fast cycling of the action. Unfortunately, the 600 and its variations did not remain in production for long, at least not when compared to the more successful 700. The original 600 was produced from 1964 until 1968, while the 600 Mohawk was produced from 1971 until 1980. Up to 94,086 rifles of all models were built. While most of those who owned a Model 600 loved them, what ultimately doomed the rifle in all its variations was its appearance, it was widely despised by critics, even though the rifles shot very well and were easy to operate. Another issue was the barrel length versus gun powders. The powder technology available back then was not suited to a short 18.5 inch barrel and was more intended for 22 – 26” barrels. Thus, higher caliber cartridges, particularly the .350 Remington Magnum, produced a large muzzle blast when fired. Today’s modern powders are much more efficient and will result in far less muzzle flash when fired from the 600 Mohawk. Overall, the Model 600 and 600 Mohawk were very much ahead of their time and in a very real sense, paved the way for today’s guide and scout rifles. Indeed, Jeff Cooper, father of the scout rifle concept, used the Model 600 as the basis for his scout rifle designs. The rifle shown here is chambered for the widely available .308 Winchester and is in very good shape though it exhibits some wear. The rifle has spent most of its life as a working gun rather than a safe queen. The two most notable issues are a chip off the butt plate and a very small chip of wood missing at the top of the slot for the bolt handle. Both are shown in the pictures. Neither issue compromises the safe operation of the rifle. The rest of the wear is mostly handling wear. There is some minor wear of the bluing in certain spots, mainly on the barrel, most notably near the muzzle on the right hand side. Best guess is that a bit of light rust formed in that area, and it was cleaned off before it could make its way down to the bare metal. Otherwise, the finish is great shape. The bore is in superb shape with some fouling present. With proper cleaning the bore should look like new. An EGW 0 MOA picatinny mount has been installed for mounting a scope. The rifle is fitted with a decent nylon sling. In addition to being a scout or guide gun, the 600 Mohawk would also function nicely as a truck gun.
