EARLY REMINGTON No. 1 ROLLING BLOCK OCTAGON SPORTER IN BIG .44-77 CALIBER, #32XX, MADE 1870s
Description: EARLY REMINGTON No. 1 ROLLING BLOCK OCTAGON SPORTER IN BIG .44-77 CALIBER, #32XX, MADE 1870s. This was actually Remington's answer to the Sharps 1874 "Buffalo Rifles" and Sporting Rifles of the time. In large caliber, they are more scarce than the Sharps and are not seen often. This one with un-cut 28" barrrel with correct Remington crown at the muzzle is fitted with the "Rough & Ready" ladder rear sight with peep in the slide and Beach combination folding globe front sight (part of the pinhead in the globe is broken). As is typical when this sight was used, there is a second dovetail in the rear of the barrel for a buckhorn rear sight to be used when the ladder sight is down. This dovetail has a fixed buckhorn sight. The barrel is correctly marked on the bottom just ahead of the forearm "44 CTG'E S" which is the standard marking for the .44-77 Sharps cartridge. The barrel, forearm, butt plate and receiver have matching serial numbers. The receiver has the correct Remington address and patent dates on the upper tang. The receiver is a dark , uncleaned mottled gray with a single, tiny hole and filler screw in the top of the octagon receiver ring- purpose unknown. The barrel blue has thinned to a mixture of gray/brown. This rifle is also fitted with a single set trigger with adjustment screw that needs an adjustment to hold set. Fine butt stock with fancier than standard grain and fine wood to metal fit. Correct butt plate. Fine forend with some very light saddle wear to the bottom ahead of the receiver. Correct metal schnable forend tip. Tight action, light trigger pull, and best of all it has a bright excellent bore with any slight corrosion ahead of the chamber and strong rifling throughout. Much better than one would expect on a large caliber black powder rifle of the frontier period. This one came out of here in Montana. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .44-77 Manufacturer: REMINGTON Model: ROLLING BLOCK SPORT. Serial Number: 32XX Barrel Length: 28" OCTAGON Condition: FINE Bore Condition: FINE+ |
