FINE CONDITION HISTORICAL REMINGTON 1885 LEE .45-70 MILITARY RIFLE, #53XXX, MADE 1893
Description: FINE CONDITION HISTORICAL REMINGTON 1885 LEE .45-70 MILITARY RIFLE, #53XXX, MADE 1893. According to John D. McAulay's excellent and relatively new book, RIFLES OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY & MARINE CORPS: The Remington-Lee apparently made a strong impression in Hawaii because the Provisional Government acquired them to arm its National Guard organized only a few days after the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. Rifles in the 53,000 serial number range were manufactured in 1893. 600 were supplied to the Navy while most of the remainder went to Hawaii. Since this rifle lacks the usual U.S. Navy anchor and other markings, but has a small script "H" cartouche in the left side of the wrist, I think it likely this is one of the Hawaii rifles. There is a photo of a Hawaii issued rifle that is about 100 serial numbers lower than this one. In fine overall condition, this one shows all the correct M-1885 receiver patent date stamping and Remington markings. It retains the correct detachable magazine and cleaning rod. The rear sight is the correct Springfield type that was utilized for this model and the sling swivels are intact. The stock is fine showing only light handling and the barrel blue shows age and is mixing brown and gray. The bore is minty bright and the action is tight. Almost all in this serial range are U.S. Navy issue, making this a very interesting and unusual variant. There is much good historical info about the Hawaii Remington-Lee rifles in McAulay's fine book.
