Rare Remington percussion cane gun
Description: Beginning in the Victorian era, any well-established, respected man would carry a walking stick: a symbol of wealth, taste, and class. While the concept of masterfully disguising a firearm inside the shaft of a walking stick had been seen earlier in Europe, it was not until John F. Thomas, master mechanic at the Remington Company, that this technique was perfected. These types of cane guns were used by men as protection as well as a stylish accessory, as street crime and violence was on the rise in the mid-19th century. In 1858, Thomas received a patent (#19,328) for his “Rifle Cane,” a percussion fired single-shot cane rifle. At first, only .31 caliber percussion cane guns were manufactured and sold by Remington. Pre-Civil War advertising refers to them as “Remington’s New Patent Gun Canes, which were loaded with a .31 caliber lead ball”. Another variation was listed in early E. Remington & Sons advertisements with longer internal barrel — it was intended for shot pellets. These gun canes received high praise and exposure due to their intricacy and taste in design. Within a year, Remington Arms was selling these gun canes to an eager public. It sold well—a successful novelty that any gentleman of means and distinction would have been pleased to own. For more click here. Also you will find included a 10 page over view of variations by Eliott I. Burka. No marking or serial numbers are shown. Chambered in muzzle loading Cal. 31 and with a chamber designed to accept a loading of shot, equal to that of an early .410. The 34" length shaft is covered with a dark brown gutta percha coating and tipped with a medal knurled finial. Trigger is smooth and domed and there is a tiny front sight bead mounted on the finial at the tip. The finial can not be removers as the sight passes through it into the bore. Handle is unscrewed from the main shaft for loading and pulled rearward to expose the nipple recess for installing a percussion cap which also raises the tiny rear sight. There is a 5/16" silver band at the joint of the handle shaft. This cane features the Rare Bulbous handle shape. It is the least often encountered, of the four standards offered by Remington. There were 500 percussion cane guns produced 1858-1866, at which time percussion cane guns ceased and a new era of self contained cartridge cane guns began. Overall this one retains a fine, even dark brown gutta percha coating with only a very few tiny tiny chips which you have to look with magnification to see, no repairs of any kind are visible. Mechanics are excellent. Bore does show some black powder pitting. Only the cane is for sale. This is an ANTIQUE and can be shipped directly to you in the USA.
