Remington Plains Rifle (Circa 1860) 50 Caliber
Description: Remington 50 caliber Plains Rifle also known as a "New York Percussion Hunting Rifle" with heavy octagonal barrel . All parts are original and unrefinished. Remington designed and manufactured the locking plate/action and stock with a Norwich Arms manufactured barrel. Remington contracted with Norwich Arms in the 1860s to manufacture heavy octagonal barrels for their larger caliber rifles until Remington was able to scale up barrel production at their own foundry in Illion NY. The demand for large caliber long range rifles grew rapidly in the 1850s as a result of American settlers moving westward to the open plains. It is evident that this gun saw some use but all parts are original and in working order. The word "Remington" is engraved (or etched) in the side plate along with the egraved image of a hunter shooting. The word "Norwich" is cast into the top side of the barrel behind the rear sight mount. The cap box, butt plate and trigger guard are all made of silver and in excellent condition. The butt stock and forearm are made from one block of hardwood. There is one eight inch crack in the wooden forearm near the percussion assembly which was previously repaired but the wood finish on the entire stock is quite uniform given its' age. This gun represents an important part of Remington Arms early rifle development and is considered to be historically significant with respect to American Firearms History. The owner/seller holds an FFL- C&R license.
