Springfield M1870 Remington Rolling Block Type 1 .50-70 Gov’t
Description: The M1870 Rolling Block has an interesting history. The National Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts manufactured 10,000 Remington pattern rolling block rifles in .50-70 Govt for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ordnance in 1870-71. During inspection of the rifles by the Bureau, it was stated that the rear sight was placed “too close” to the breech making the rifles "unsafe", so the entire lot of 10,000 were sold to the Baltimore firm of Poultney & Trimble. Eventually, it came to light that P&T fronted for E. Remington & Sons in arming the French during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. An infuriated board of inquiry looked into the matter, accusing General A.B. Dyer, Chief of Ordnance, of being in collusion with the Remingtons to supply firearms to France – a large problem given that the U.S. Government was supposed to be neutral during the conflict. Fortunately for the Navy, P&T paid the Ordnance Department enough for the 10,000 rifles for the Armory to make 14,000 new rolling block rifles with the "correct" sight placement (known among collectors as the Type 2 with the earlier labeled as a Type 1) to replace the original. In the end, the U.S. Navy got 4,000 more rifles than they originally paid for, and General Dyer's workmen at Springfield got thousands of hours of work. The rifle here is in good condition given its immense age of 149 years! Even compared to most Rolling Blocks it is in good condition. The bore has minor pitting but is still very much in shootable condition. The wood furniture is good condition. There are no visible cracks. The tightening screw for the middle barrel band is a replacement. The rear sight is a flip up type with two distinct heights. It appears there may have been a separate sight blade for a third height at one point, but it is missing now. The only mechanical issue with the rifle is the spring that puts tension on the locking lever is a little weak. The block can be opened a little easily though the hammer still has to be cocked first. The cleaning rod has intact threading and must be unscrewed and then pulled out rather than pulled straight out. If you are a collector of Remington Rolling Blocks, the M1870 Navy Type 1 is certainly one you don’t want to miss. Interested buyers are welcome to request extra pictures.
