Rare Remington Model 1867 Rolling Block Naval Cadet Rifle
Description:
Serial #8507, .50-45 CF, 32 1/2? barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This is one of only 498 or so examples manufactured in 1868 by Springfield Armory for the U.S. Navy and is in splendid condition with the barrel retaining 90-95% of the original blue under an old, lightly flaked coating of protective lacquer. There is some fading at the muzzle and some dark plum freckling behind the rear sight at the breech and a few scattered spots of freckling where the lacquer has worn or flaked away. The frame, which is identical to the USN Model 1867 Carbine, has 97-98% of the original color case-hardening remaining with 90% of the original bright fire blue on the sideplate, and the hammer and breechblock have much of an armory-applied added blue finish remaining as well. The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good-fine overall condition with some scattered light handling marks and surface blemishes throughout the armory re-applied varnish finish. Additionally, there is a pair of stable, hairline, with-the-grain cracks on the left side of the wrist running back from the end of the lower tang. The buttplate is in fine shape as well and is unit marked on the tang: ?D/191?. The rifle does come with a ramrod but it is a non-original example and not correct for this particular model. These are quite rare cadet rifles and, while sharing several parts in common with the Model 1867 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle, are much more seldomly encountered today. This example is in fine condition overall and has an exceptionally high degree of attractive and bright finish remaining. Antique
