Early 1900s CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA Military Rifle

Here we present a C&R Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. Model 1910 Rolling Block Military Rifle, made circa 1911 in Ilion, New York. The details of this rifle are a little confusing, but basically, Hartley and Graham of Schuler, Hartley, and Graham fame (the largest firearms dealer in the United States in 1860) along with Winchester took over Remington in the 1880s. Hartley and Graham owned the Union Metallic Cartridge Company. The two, Remington and UMC, were joined in 1910/1911 to form Remington-UMC.

This rifle is chambered in 7mm Mauser. The Model 1910 is a variation of the Model 1902, with a 2-line Remington-UMC address on the tang. Like the Model 1902, it has a rotating ejector instead of an extractor. The Remington Rolling Block rifles and carbines were made for various governments, most notably Mexico and those of South America, and chambered in .43 Spanish, 7mm Spanish, 8mm Lebel and .30 U.S. We believe this rifle was made for one of the South American countries, probably Nicaragua, as they purchased 1897, 1902 and 1910 rifles in 7mm Spanish and were not known to otherwise mark the rifles.

The action on the Rolling Block was extremely strong and could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1800s. The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were popular with civilians as well. Along with the Sharps rifle it was one of two rifles probably used more than any other by the buffalo hunters who hunted the American bison herds in the 1870s and 1880s. Civilian Remington rolling block rifles, and later surplus military rifles, became very popular among hunters in Scandinavia, particularly for moose hunting, with ammunition for the rifles being commonly available on the civilian market into the 1920s-1930s.

The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were popular with civilians as well.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a solid stock with above average handling/storage wear. “1880” marked receiver. Legible markings. The cleaning rod is split into two pieces, both are included.
