The 550-1 Remington has an interesting history. The rifle was originally released in 1946 as a continuation of the 550A. The 550s were well-regarded for their reliability and accuracy, and, with tube feed and a "floating chamber," were able to cycle all three sizes of .22 rimfire interchangeably. The single most obvious feature was a deflector to send hot empties forward, away from the shooter's face. They were designed primarily as small game hunting rifles, but their accuracy brought them to target competitions as well.
