Remington No. 1 ½ Rolling Block .32 RF w/flip-up peep rear sight
Description: The Remington Rolling Block was a popular hunting and sporting rifle back in its time. In fact, even today it remains popular enough that reproductions are made by manufacturers known for their reproductions of famous firearms of the Old American West in the late-19th century. The Rolling Block here we believe to be a No. 1 ½ model given its caliber. The .32 RF as well as other shorter cartridges (both centerfire and rimfire) were chambered in the No. 1 ½ model while the No. 1 chambered the larger rifle calibers. The present rifle, like most rolling blocks, has seen a fair amount of use. The bore is slightly pitted, but it is still in shootable condition. The original rear sight has been removed from the barrel and replaced by a tang-mounted rear sight. It is a peep sight that is adjustable for elevation. The wooden furniture has nicks and dings but does not appear to have any cracks in though, though there is a miniscule chip in the wood on the bottom near the lower tang, which is shown in the pictures. The original finish is of course worn. With a serial number of 2067 (out of several thousand produced), the rifle likely left the factory around 1889-1890, meaning it is 129-130 years old! Despite this, the springs that put tension on the loading block and hammer are still strong. Although the .32 RF is no longer made, the No. 1 ½ would make a nice display gun. On the other hand, it could be possible to convert the rifle to a centerfire caliber. It would require a centerfire style rolling block hammer and a new barrel. There are custom barrel makers who specialize in octagonal barrels and from time to time S&S Firearms of Glendale, NY sells rough casting repros of the rolling block. These merely need a final fitting and finishing to be done. Alternatively, a centerfire block could be found on another rolling block with a shot out barrel. Either way, the No. 1 ½ would make a nice addition to any Rolling Block collection. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: E.
