Terence A. Smith Signed, Civil War Theme, Deluxe Long Range Creedmoor Pattern No. 1 Rolling Block Heavy Barrel Sporting Rifle 45-90
Description:
A beautifully crafted modern custom rifle built around an original 19th-century Remington No. 1 rolling block action, this 2019 Terence A. Smith rifle offers exceptional collector appeal through its historic action, master-level engraving, British proof documentation, and long-range Creedmoor-inspired styling.
Built in 2019 by Terence A. Smith, a highly skilled artisan formerly employed by both Boss & Co. and Holland & Holland
Uses an original Remington-designed No. 1 rolling block action, likely produced by Spanish Oviedo and manufactured circa 1871–1893
Single-shot rolling block design—historically prized, much like Sharps rifles, for:
Simple and rugged construction
Dependable operation
Strong action design
Long-range accuracy
Powerful caliber capability
Accompanied by a Certificate of Proof from The Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House
Certificate states the rifle was made by T.A. Smith
Lists the rifle’s serial number and caliber
Styled in the tradition of the Remington-Hepburn No. 3 Long Range Creedmoor rifles, adding strong appeal for collectors of classic long-range target rifle designs
Beautiful deluxe checkered wood furniture
Barrel features the three short “Creedmoor” flats at the breech, a desirable period-inspired detail
Chamber/caliber marking on the top barrel flat: “45/90~2-4 CASE”
Action is beautifully engraved by Smith with near full-coverage engraving
Engraving features an American Civil War theme, including:
Detailed battle scenes on both sides of the action
“U.S./CIVIL/WAR” on the rear of the breech block
“1st & 2nd MANNASSAS” on the left lower edge
“GETTYSBURG” on the right lower edge
“1861,” “CS US,” and “1865” on the pivot pin components on the left side
Top of the action over the breech is marked:
“T-A-SMITH/LATE OF/HOLLAND & HOLLAND”
Marking appears above and below the bust of a Confederate soldier
Matching serial number appears in multiple locations:
Lower tang
Left of the breech block
Left of the hammer
Sight configuration:
Front sight dovetail is empty
No rear sight seat
Upper tang is drilled and tapped for a peep sight
Mounted with a multi-point checkered forearm fitted with an iron cap
Nicely figured pistol-grip stock with:
Shadowline cheekpiece
Checkered bare butt
Combining a genuine 19th-century rolling block action with 2019 bespoke craftsmanship, documented Birmingham proof, and elaborate Civil War-themed engraving, this rifle stands out as a distinctive collector-grade piece with strong historical, artistic, and long-range target-rifle appeal.
Condition
Very fine as professionally embellished by Terence A. Smith, retains 80% plus of the slightly thinned blue finish, showing a plum hue overall and slightly darker near the breech. The action remains bright with crisp engraving overall. The deluxe wood is excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
