Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Swiss Herrmann Single Shot Silver Inlaid Schuetzen Rifle, made circa the 1840s to the 1850s in Aarberg, Switzerland. A Schuetzen is a type of rifle used in European long-range competition. Its German root is from the word Schütze which can be translated as “shooter.” The earliest usage was to denote units of marksmen or sharpshooters back in the days of muzzleloading firearms. Some sources claim that it was once used to describe archers, or more specifically, crossbowmen. These rifles are typically heavy and can weigh upwards of 15 pounds. Much shooting with these rifles was done standing using a palm rest and butt stock prongs to help the shooter balance the rifle so the weight aids in stability.
When Schuetzen became a competitive sport in Germany, many gun makers built these rifles to specifically fit an individual shooter. This means if you come across one in the wild, there is a good chance that it will not fit you with regard to grip, length of pull, cheek rest configuration or even how the butt plate fits your shoulder. This rifle features a beautiful Schuetzen style stock. The trigger guard is large and is designed to be used as a pistol grip. It has a double set trigger that barely needs a thought to press, it is so light. The barrel is 36 inches long and octagonal.
The overall condition is good. Brown patina. Damascus twist, silver inlaid barrel. The action is strong, and both triggers maintain full functionality. The bore is good for its age, dark with some rifling remaining. A Small hole in side of barrel at the muzzle. The false muzzle does not fit squarely and the handle is broke (included). Frant blade is absent. A spare sight is included (not be tested for fit). Markings are legible. The stock is fine. The buttplate has pulled away from the tow of the stock. Front sling swivel is absent. Middle ramrod lug has some wiggle. The bore is sleeved.
