Bessler 450/400 3" Clamshell Double Rifle
Description:
R. Bessler & Sohn clamshell [Muschel Verschluss] double rifle in 450 /400 3" Nitro Express built in 1925 with Suhl nitro proof for a 26 gram [400 grain] bullet. Krupp Fluid Steel 24" extractor dovetail lump barrels with raised solid matted rib with 1 standing and 4 folding leaf express sights. Bores are very good, shiney with strong rifling from throat to muzzle. Clamshell action with Greener crossbolt has gone silver with 85% coverage scroll and floral engraving. Pistol grip buttstock with horn pistol grip cap, shadow line pancake cheekpiece and drop points. Deeley forend release. 14" LOP over an old solid 3/4" red pad. 9lb 14oz This is a solid working rifle with a new hinge pin by J.J. Perodeau. It is tight and on face with very good bores. At one time it was set up with scope mounts and could be again. Old reblue remains at 97% Stock has had varnish added but I don't think ever sanded. Very fine checkering at 65% It shoots Hornady factory ammo 5" apart at 60 yards and will need load developement. Nothing more sexy than these clamshell double rifles.
