The Krieghoff Classic “Big Five” double rifle, engraved by Master Engraver Mario Terzi, stands among the finest modern sporting arms ever produced—an extraordinary fusion of dangerous game performance and museum-quality artistry. Built in 1997 and prominently featured in Terzi’s own book (pages 92–95), this exhibition-grade set represents a rare opportunity to acquire a firearm that is both highly collectible and fully documented in the engraver’s published work.
Chambered in .500/416 Nitro Express (3¼"), the rifle is purpose-built for dangerous game, featuring 23.625" barrels, a standing express rear sight on a quarter rib, and a Zeiss Diavari-ZM 1.5–6x42 T* scope mounted in quick-detach swing mounts. It weighs 8 lb 7.7 oz without the scope and 10 lb 1.4 oz with it, offering the proper mass and balance for heavy-caliber shooting. The action is Krieghoff’s renowned sideplated boxlock, incorporating a cocking safety, single trigger, extractor, and Purdey-style hidden third fastener—engineered for absolute reliability in the most demanding hunting environments.
Accompanying the rifle is a fully fitted second set of 20 gauge 3" barrels, measuring 28" and equipped with thin-wall choke tubes (Modified and Full), transforming this into a highly versatile sporting system suitable for both dangerous game and upland pursuits.
The defining feature of this firearm is the exceptional, full-coverage engraving by Mario Terzi, executed on a French grey finished action with remarkable depth and artistic composition. The left sideplate portrays two tigers moving through a wooded landscape, alive with motion and tension, while a fox in the foreground adds depth and narrative. Near the hinge pin, a Lynx carries a deer in its jaws, capturing a moment of raw predation. On the right sideplate, two stoic rhinos stand beneath a baobab tree, contrasted by a cheetah in full pursuit of an impala in the foreground, with a lioness positioned near the hinge—an intentional juxtaposition of calm presence and explosive action. The engraving is signed next to the trigger guard.
The underside of the action is dominated by a powerful bull elephant in a savanna setting. Beneath, mirrored cobras rise in symmetry, while above, lion heads appear to breathe intricate scrollwork from their open jaws, framing the gold-inlaid “Krieghoff Classic” inscription. Above this, two Cape buffalo bulls complete the “Big Five” theme. The trigger guard features a finely detailed lion portrait, and the top lever is crowned with a tribal mask motif, with engraving flowing seamlessly across the fences and top tang in Terzi’s unmistakable style.
The rifle is stocked in exhibition-grade walnut, featuring a Rigby-style right-handed cheekpiece, exceptional dark figure, and sharp, precise checkering. Both sets of barrels have their own forend. Mechanically, it remains mint and appears unfired, with both barrel sets locking up tight, the action operating flawlessly, and the trigger breaking crisp.
As noted in Terzi’s own book (page 92):
“This Krieghoff double rifle was the perfect engraved metal and wood complement for the painting by Manuela Gualdi on page 93. Terzi proves that his unrelenting commitment to drawing and painting are essential skills to become a Master Engraver. The relevance is easily seen in his tribute to dangerous game hunting.”
And further on page 95:
“This dangerous game double rifle is a tool dedicated to the business of hunting. It is transformed into an elegant work of art through the game scene engraving. Note the stoic rhinos compared to the action of the cheetah in pursuit of the impala.”
To own a Terzi-engraved firearm is exceptional; to own one illustrated and discussed in his book is on another level entirely. This Krieghoff Classic “Big Five” is not simply a firearm—it is a museum-quality masterpiece, representing the highest level of modern engraving and gunmaking craftsmanship.
