Description:
SOLD ** Chapuis Safari Express Double Rifle, 375 H&H Mag, scoped with case, Excellent Plus
CHAPUIS Safari Express, .375 H&H Mag – renowned German-made Schmidt & Bender 30mm 1.25-4x24 scope mounted with ERA patented swivel mounts for quick removal. This classic double rifle has 25 ½” ejector barrels mounted on its action with a case-hardened receiver (just beautiful case colors with no wear points), full-coverage hand engraving (not border engraving) by master engraver, Ivan Thierry, and fancy upgrade of French walnut with emblazoned figure, reminiscent of those found on Fabbri shotguns.
This Chapuis Safari Express double rifle in .375 H&H Mag is a true dangerous game gun, envied world-over by professional hunters.
This is the heavy Chapuis scalloped boxlock action with its bolstered frame, as used for the big bores, finished with casehardened colors and fine scroll engraving as completed in 2009 (current version is coin finished). The shoe-lump barrels have an integral, engraved quarter rib, with an express sight, a multiple-leaf which gives a fixed “close” point of aim with three folding leaves engraved for and sighted in at 100., 200, and 300 meters with factory turn-off scope bases. As a best gun, it has bushed firing pins, automatic ejectors (which throw fired cases clear and set up unfired cases for finger extraction), a holdopen toplever, automatic top tang safety and beaded-edge triggerguard extending fully to the trap-door grip cap with 3 tie-down screws. Weight is 9lbs, 1 oz. without scope. This is a best rifle and is mechanically perfect and tight with bright unused bores.
The fully figured French walnut stock is near Exhibition Grade and is mated with a semi-beavertail forend inlaid with a Deeley-release. Other stock features include a straight comb with Holland & Holland shadowline cheekpiece, an open pistol grip with slight palmswell and matching palm flute, fitted with a steel pistol grip cap with trapdoor compartment, a rear swivel stud, and finished with classic point pattern hand-checkering.
LOP 14¼” from front trigger to solid black Decelerator recoil pad.
Included are the maker’s case and accessories.
With the addition of the world-class ERA scope rings and German Schmidt & Bender 1.1-4x20 30mm scope, it completely ready to take on the world’s dangerous game.
I couldn’t put it better than George Caswell of Champlin Firearms when he wrote:
“Champlin Firearms has handled more Double Rifles than any Dealer in the World and we feel this (the Chapuis) is the best buy in any current made serious Dangerous Game double. We have had every current made boxlock double rifle in our shop, have shot them all, worked on all, had all of them apart and we know for fact that you can't buy a better one for the money than a Chapuis… (we) hunt with and shoot a lot of double rifles. We flat know this is one tough, attractive, high precision, go to Africa and have money left for the second Buffalo type of gun. I challenge you to show me a better current double rifle for the money.”
Why a .375 H&H MAG: According to the writers of Cartridges of the World, the .375 H&H Mag has been “long considered the best all-around African caliber… while many Alaskan hunters and guides prefer it for moose and grizzly bear. John Taylor, in his book African Rifles and Cartridges, rates the .375 for African hunting as “the most effective, all-around cartridge.” If you want a .375 for North American big game, then this double rifle with its quick second shot, aided by its perfect scope selection, which also can be removed quickly for wounded game in the brush, is the perfect choice for elk, moose and the big bears (and those of Kamchatka). If you want it for African hunting, it meets the required minimum caliber for most African countries, is the perfect choice for lion and buffalo and yet heavy enough for elephant in the hands of a good shot. It is much easier to hold for pinpoint accuracy than the bigger calibers like .416 Rigby and .470 Nitro. Chapuis, even though a double barreled gun, is known for its accuracy. The maker spends a lot of time regulating the barrels and doesn’t quit until bullet holes are printing on top of each other at 50 meters with 300 grain factory loads.
Comes with maker’s leather case and accessories.
Condition: Wood finish shows light marks, at about 97%. Bluing is 99.9%, case colors are 99%, bores are as new, and the checkering diamonds are still crisp and at 100%.
This gun is extremely accurate and perfectly regulated.
It is the crème de la crème double rifle for the most dangerous game on Earth. If you are comparing others on the market, note this one already has the quick detachable German ERA swivel system and German high-end scope, both big extra expenses for those that don’t and a big savings of the hassle factor of getting them purchased and installed correctly… and then sighted in. But most of all, the wood figure and color, along with the metal colors, gives this rifle a particular personality that draws you to it, found only rarely on a few guns. It is a heirloom piece.
MSR is $14,900 without scope rings and scope. For 98% condition, value drops to $14,602 but add another $514 for the ERA ring set system, $1,750 for the scope, and $850 for the case, for a total of $17,716. Price for the package is $13,500 and it is already sighted in.
