This rifle is a Merkel 140-2 in .450-400 Nitro Express.  It has selective ejectors and about 70 percent medium/small English style scroll engraving on a French greyed Tbackground.  The barrels are 23 ½ inches long and a LOP of 14 inches from the buttpad to the front trigger.

This Merkel rates at 99% condition with well figured and well laid out Turkish Walnut that is both pretty and strong.  Blueing is immaculate as well as the condition of the bores - which are 100%.   It is being sold by the second owner who kept it as a safe queen until going to Africa this July and taking a very respectable cape buffalo with it.

The .450 - 400 Nitro Express 3 inch round is sadly one of the lesser known rounds as it it dwells in the shadow of the the .470 and .500 Nitro Express, however it launches a 400 gr .400 caliber bullet at 2150 fps in comparison to the iconic .416 Rigby which shoots a bullet only 10 grains heavier and .005 bigger in diameter - a less than 1 percent difference.  Recoil in this rifle that is both well balanced between the hands and its stocked to come up like an upland gun, but sufficiently  heavy for the task to be quite  manageable and allows for an almost instantaneous follow up shot in comparison to a 416 Rigby bolt gun, and is roughly 8 inches shorter in overall length when sorting out dangerous game in the tangles.  With cases, bullets, moulds, and reloading dies available this may be the only double rifle you will own.
