Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 African Rifle .458 Winchester Magnum Special Order
Description:
The pre-64 Model 70 African is a very rare item with just 1,226 made. This one was manufactured in 1960. It has a special order high-comb extra length stock with a LOP of 14 1/2 inches and a Griffin & Howe style cheek piece. Checkering patterns are also special order; the black forend tip and two bakelite-covered cross bolts are standard. It is equipped with a Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight of the later design NOT requiring stock inletting - almost certainly factory installed. The barrel is drilled and tapped (with plug screws) for the standard rear sight. The bolt, extractor and follower are jeweled, and the barrel is rust blued - standard for Super Grade rifles of that era.
The overall condition is excellent. Bluing is flawless with minimal wear only on the bolt handle and knob. The stock is also in excellent condition with no significant nicks, dents or scratches.
The only potential flaw is the solid red Winchester pad which may not be correct for the period, since the transition to the ventilated style pad started at about serial no. 460,000. Also, there are grinding gouges which call the originality of the pad to the rifle into question.
