Winchester Model 70 Pre-64
Description:
Outstanding custom built African Dangerous Game bush rifle built by premier rifle builder Mr. Lon Paul of Tanglewood Custom Rifles. This rifle was close to three years in the making with total attention to detail.
The rifle started as a Winchester (pre-64) Model 70 in caliber .375 H&H. Lon lapped & polished the action resulting in a butter smooth action. The control feed ejector has been filed to accept a round inserted directly in chamber if neccesary. Both the bolt and follower have been polished and machine jewelled like the early Super Grades. The Duane Wiebe one piece "coffin" drop box bottom metal accomodates six rounds resulting in 6+1 capacity. The 22" barrel is fitted with one piece ramped barrel band front sight with flip up night sight, as well as one piece band sling swivel. Two leaf regulated folding rear sight with 24kt gold wire inlay. The Pre-64 action of course is drilled and tapped to accomodate a scope and to be "super-adequate, a vintage Lyman 48 WJS long shank peep sight has been fitted. Extra peep sight aperatures are stored in the trap door grip cap. The bottom metal is engraved "Six Cartridges" and the trap door grip cap is engraved with my initials and inlayed in 24kt gold. The bottom metal, crossbolts and grip cap were case colored by Doug at Turnbull Restorations.
The English Walnut feathercrotch blank with straight grain through the wrist was purchased by me at Safari Club International in Las Vegas. In keeping with the Model 70 Super Grade theme, Lon copied the early Pre-64 diamond checkering pattern of Winchester and upgraded to 24LPI, then added an ebony wood forend to complete the look. The stock was shaped in the traditional English "Best Gun" style with a pancake cheek piece, a 14-1/2" L.O.P. with 1/4" Cast Off. The action is reinforced with two case hardened crossbolts. Finishing up with an early "vintage style" Winchester recoil pad from Tony Galazan at Connecticut Shotgun, and hand rubbed oil finished to a satin sheen.
The rifle includes a sling and will ship in a hard case.
There are many nice DG rifles out there, but this is a one of a kind that surely would satisfy Terry Wielands' wish for "The Perfect Dangerous Game Bush Rifle."
